Description
W&M Dance Projects’ Artists in Residence program supports independent artists at all stages of creative development — offering financial assistance, outside-eye mentorship, professional development, project consultation, and production support, as requested. It is a structure designed to sustain inquiry while strengthening artistic independence. Launched in 2008, the Artists in Residence program continues to respond to the needs of Calgary’s dance community, fostering dialogue between emerging and established voices.
This season’s Artists in Residence include Nicole Charlton Goodbrand (WMPT dancer and Associate Artist), as well as Alèn Martel, and Sierra Oszust —also W&M Physical Theatre artists who are performing with WM2 this season. Their presence across both programs reveals the continuum of growth within the company: artist, apprentice, collaborator.
The evening will feature works-in-progress or excerpts of work by the current residents — an opportunity to witness choreography as it evolves, refines, and finds its voice.
The program will also feature a presentation of Songs Without Words created by Davida Monk, performed by Deanna Witwer— a distilled and resonant work that reflects Monk’s enduring contribution to Canadian contemporary dance. Created through Monk’s initiative M-Body, the work reveals a choreographic language shaped by decades of inquiry and artistic rigour.
An evening of research, risk, and refinement — where process informs performance.
