The Association of Canadian Archivists Student Chapter at the University of British Columbia (ACA@UBC) is delighted to present its 12th annual international Seminar and Symposium, From Accountability to Memory, which will be held at UBC from February 13th to 14th, 2020.

ISO 15489 defines appraisal as “the process of evaluating business activities to determine which records need to be created and captured and how long the records need to be kept.” The openness of this definition has allowed the evolution of archival and records management practices to adapt to the current political and social climate. Currently, governments are issuing legislation that imposes upon public officers the duty to document all of their activities and decisions. In this context, records and archives managers have become an essential part of the documentation of internal procedures, including appraisal decisions, destruction, and preservation, at all levels. Likewise, individuals are gaining power over the existence of records about them and by them by exercising the right to destroy under the right to be forgotten, while people claim the need to preserve their memory as well as to choose the place of preservation. The personal and legal liability of records and archives professionals have become deep-seated concerns in recent years.

The 12th annual ACA@UBC Seminar and Symposium will explore the role of appraisal in society today, as well as on our professional roles in relation to it.

Please note that while the date, time, and location provided through ticket registration are for the Symposium day, taking place on Friday, February 14, 2020, all registrants are invited and encouraged to attend the Seminar sessions on Thursday, February 13, 2020.

As in previous years, all activities will take place on the University of British Columbia campus. The event will feature a seminar and a symposium with international speakers.

The seminar will take place at The Nest Building at UBC, on Thursday, February 13, 2020. It is a non-ticketed event. The seminar will consist of interactive panels with the topics:

  • Accountability Through the Duty to Document Government Activities
  • The Need to Preserve and Right to Destroy Public Records
  • Selection and Acquisition of Sensitive Records
  • Advancing Memory into the Digital Future

The symposium will take place at the Frederic Wood Theatre at UBC, on Friday, February 14, 2020. Tickets purchased here are for the symposium. The symposium will feature formal presentations from the following speakers:

  • Gabriele Bezzi (Director, Region Emilia-Romagna Records Network, Italy)
  • Adrian Cunningham (Former Director of the Digital Archives Program, Queensland State Archives, Australia)
  • Darrell Evans (Canadian Institute for Information and Privacy Society, B.C.)
