Description

The Dance Centre presents

12 Minutes Max Studio Showing

2024/2025 season: Module 1

Free admission

This edition of The Dance Centre’s long-running 12 Minutes Max program features two contrasting new works in development by André Bessette and Lyric Tsuji, and Asal Ahadi and Shalaleh Rismani, drawing on their roots in Métis jigging and Azerbaijani folk dances respectively. The artists will share and discuss their works with the audience in this informal studio showing.

André Bessette and Lyric Tsuji are dancers with V’ni Dansi’s Louis Riel Métis Dancers. They are developing a 2-person square dance, their Red River Duet, exploring the possibilities and limitations it creates for choreography, and innovating within the form while reflecting the history of jigging.

Asal Ahadi and Shalaleh Rismani are the co-directors of Chichaklar Dance Company, a Vancouver-based ensemble rooted in the rich traditions of Azerbaijani folk dance. Confined Spaces, Boundless Movements (working title) traces the journey of two women from restricted, indoor spaces to newfound creative freedom, blending traditional Azerbaijani dance with modern influences.
