Description

Join us on December 4, 6:30 pm, for the launch of The Hundred-Year Trek: A History of Student Life at UBC. This event is presented by the UBC Alma Mater Society in partnership with Alumni UBC and Heritage House Publishing.

Moderated by Justin McElroy, the evening will feature a panel discussion with Hundred-Year Trek author Sheldon Goldfarb and a cast of UBC characters including Dave Frank, Sophia Haque, Nestor Korchinksy, and Ava Nasiri.

From Pierre Berton to Kim Campbell and Justin Trudeau, UBC has accepted some impressive students in its time. Yet the story of UBC’s student body—the largest and arguably most vocal in western Canada—is much more than the achievements of its most famous former students.

Featuring hundreds of photos and illustrations from the AMS archives, The Hundred-Year Trek is a visually fascinating account of student struggles and achievements through the years, as they helped to build their university and gain a share in determining its direction. More than just a year-to-year recap of events, this book is a lively and informative look at the cultural trends that have shaped Canada over the past century. See here for more information.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, and free for students. Light refreshments will be served and a cash bar available. Please e-mail execprojects@ams.ubc.ca for a student ticket.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event and can also be purchased at the UBC Bookstore.

Time Capsule Project
We’re looking for contributions of memorabilia for a time capsule to be created in spring 2018. Please bring your small items such as photos, event tickets, or mementos of any sort along to the launch, and we’ll collect them for our time capsule.
For more information on the time capsule contact execprojects@ams.ubc.ca.

The Hundred-Year Trek Panelists

Sheldon Goldfarb, author, The Hundred-Year Trek

Sheldon Goldfarb has been the archivist of UBC’s Alma Mater Society for over twenty years. He holds a master’s degree in Archival Studies and an MA and PhD in English. He is the author of the young adult novel Remember, Remember (shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award), as well as academic books on William Makepeace Thackeray and dozens of literary essays, book reviews, and biographical articles.

Justin McElroy, Moderator

Justin McElroy is the city politics reporter for CBC Vancouver, but he learned his trade covering AMS politicians for the The Ubyssey, where he served as news editor, sports editor and coordinating editor. Justin graduated in 2011 with a political science degree.

Dave Frank

Dave has had a long association with UBC as a student, AMS past president, past chair of CiTR, research manager at the Sauder School of Business, and two-term member of the UBC Board of Governors. He has worked as a consultant and senior executive in the transport industry, and served for five years as director of marketing and public relations for St. John Ambulance. He is currently chair of the Richmond Community Foundation.

Sophia Haque

Sophia began her involvement with the AMS in her early years as student, participating in various student clubs before working on the Finance Commission and eventually being elected AMS VP-Finance in 2006/07. After graduating with a bachelor of commerce degree in human resources, Sophia worked at an executive-search firm before taking on her current role as a program manager at Studentcare, a leading provider of student health and dental plans in Canada. This role has her returning to campus regularly and seeing first-hand the changes brought about by newer generations of student executives.

Nestor Korchinksy

Nestor Korchinsky was the face of UBC intramurals from the late 1960s until his retirement in 2004. During this time he introduced such quintessential UBC events as Storm the Wall, Day of the Longboat, and the Spanish Banks Downhill Derby. He reintroduced the Arts ’20 Relay and established a newspaper focusing on extra-curricular activities (The Point), as well as UBC-TV and the website Live@UBC. Nestor is the recipient of many honours and awards including the 1982 AMS Great Trekker Award, the 1993 Blythe Eagles Volunteer Service Award from the UBC Alumni Association, the 1996 President’s Service Award, and the 2002 Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal. In 2008 he was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame. He currently serves on the UBC President’s Advisory Committee on Campus Enhancement.

Ava Nisiri

Ava Nasiri served as VP Administration and later President of the AMS between 2014 and 2017.  During her time at the AMS,  Ava rejuvenated services for clubs, marched with students protesting tuition increases, saw the transition from old SUB to the AMS student Nest and oversaw a successful referendum for a new student Rec Centre. As a student she may have stopped by karaoke Tuesdays at the gallery lounge from time to time.  Ava holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from UBC and is currently navigating an exciting new world of job and grad school applications.
