Russell deCarle in the Green Sanderson Hall at Hugh's Room, 296 Broadview Avenue
Friday March 14 8:00PM
$40 in advance, $47 at the door

deCarle’s music isn’t easily categorized. Apparent are a lifetime of influences absorbing a wide range of musical genres from a time when Buck Owens, Frank Sinatra, and The Beatles could be heard back-to-back on commercial radio.

For some artists, the urge to make solo records asserts itself almost as soon as they start to gain attention as part of a successful band. Not so for deCarle: “For decades people were asking for a solo record,” he says, “but I never thought I was ready and the band always satisfied the musical part of my life.”

Russell's sound may surprise those who remember Prairie Oyster, but truth is that the band was always more than a “country” band, and deCarle’s warm, burnished and intimate voice has always honoured an eclectic range of songs. True to form, the songs off his most recent albums The End of the Road and Alone in this Crowd offer a fluent collection of songs that mix southern soul and restrained balladry, with obvious touches of jazz, blues, old-school country, and western swing. deCarle’s songwriting has absorbed all those influences, and he avidly listens to both soul singers and the men and women who made early country music so compelling.

Opening Performance by Jerry Leger

JERRY LEGER
Canadian singer-songwriter Jerry Leger's latest release, Lucky Streak, is a live-in-the-studio album produced by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies. It includes solo acoustic re-recordings of songs throughout Leger's body of work, presented the way they were written or the way they've evolved. Lucky Streak follows Leger's Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson) produced record Donlands. Released on Cowboy Junkies label, Latent Recordings, Donlands was greeted with rave reviews from UK's Uncut Magazine and Rolling Stone Germany. Jerry toured those parts of the world in support of Donlands as well as select Canadian dates. These performances included his debut on the historic Massey Hall stage in

Toronto and shows opening for legendary artist Steve Earle. One of the most respected singer- songwriters around, Ron Sexsmith says, “Leger has that spark in him that all the great songwriters have. He's the real deal.”

296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
